Content

This workshop is an invitation to reconnect with the creator within and rediscover painting as a space of creativity, freedom of expression, and personal exploration.

Through colour, textures, and experimentation with different media, you will learn to set aside the fear of making mistakes and allow the painting to flow more freely and authentically.

During these three days you will explore materials, pigments, and surfaces, using curiosity and experimentation as tools to grow as an artist and awaken your own voice, full of strength, authenticity, and life.

Day 1

• Introduction to the expressive language of watercolor through colour, textures, and composition.

• Watercolour textures: granulation with single colours, colour combinations, complementary colours, and basic principles of abstract composition.

• Exploration of watercolor on different papers: hot pressed, cold pressed, rough, and Yupo paper.

• Exploration of Daniel Smith iridescent watercolours. Paints will be included.

Day 2

• Further exploration of materials and media: salt, inks, alcohol, pure pigment with gum arabic, gold leaf, gold powder, charcoal powder, liquid charcoal, and graphite powder.

• Use of alcohol inks on Yupo paper.

• Collage and stamping on paper.

Day 3

• Use of crumpled tissue paper glued over vibrant watercolor washes as a base for continuing to paint the final layer on the tissue surface.

• Masking techniques: masking fluid, masking powder, wax, and painter’s tape.

• Application of watercolor ground on other surfaces such as glass, plastic, or wood, and use of stencils.

Angela Barbi

Ángela Barbi (Girona, Spain) is a visual artist specializing in watercolor and painting. Her career weaves together a long history as an educator and cultural manager with her artistic development, focused on color, expression, and mixed media techniques.

From an early age, she felt a deep passion for drawing and painting, later studying classical drawing and expressionist painting, and delving into color theory inspired by Goethe. Her artistic practice is defined by a free and expressive approach, where emotion and the creative process play a central role. As she states: “I love painting primarily in an abstract way, using different techniques and media. My pleasure lies more in expressing what I feel than in representing reality.”

For more than 25 years, she worked as an English teacher, an experience that provided her with a strong pedagogical foundation and led her to coordinate international educational exchange projects. In 2005, she decided to devote herself fully to art and founded EPC Art Courses (Enjoy Painting Catalonia), a platform that organizes workshops and “watercolor holidays” in Spain and other countries, in collaboration with renowned watercolor masters.

She was a founding member of IWS Spain and has served as a juror in international watercolor competitions, in addition to collaborating with delegations of the International Watercolour Society in various countries. She has exhibited both collectively and individually across Europe, Asia, and the Americas, integrating her personal work into the international art scene while combining her artistic production with an active commitment to teaching and promoting the arts.
