Simonida Filipova Kitanovska – North Macedonia.
Simonida Filipova Kitanovska (Skopje, North Macedonia, 1965) is a visual artist whose career spans more than three decades of creative exploration, with exhibitions across Europe and the United States. After graduating from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Skopje in 1988, studying under prominent professors such as Dimitar Kondovski and Rodoljub Anastasov, her work began to be showcased at the National Gallery, establishing her presence in her country’s artistic landscape.
Between 1991 and 1997, she lived and worked in Boston, USA, where she exhibited in venues such as the Agora Gallery in Soho, New York, and continued to develop her practice across diverse media, including oil and acrylic painting, mixed media, installations, and video.
In the later stages of her career, Simonida has focused particularly on watercolor, exploring color, expressive gesture, and the immediacy of the stroke. Her works have been featured in over one hundred group exhibitions and numerous solo shows in museums and galleries in North Macedonia, France, Germany, Serbia, Australia, India, and other countries.
In addition to her artistic practice, she has worked as a book illustrator and as a teacher of drawing and painting, sharing her experience and sensitivity with new generations of artists. Regarding her creative process, Simonida states:
"For as long as I can remember, the act of painting has always followed the same path for me: first, the complete image appears in my mind—every detail, every color—and then comes the execution, as simple and as swift as covering the white paper with paint. Color is my primary tool; with it, I draw, create forms, metaphors, and rhythms. To me, being an honest artist means—if you do not like your work, change it until you do. This is what I consider the true path to art."
