Jung Hun-Sung, South Korea
Jung Hun-Sung (b. 1971, Yeosu, South Korea) is a watercolorist who has made portraiture a territory of light, gesture, and memory. Self-taught and profoundly observant, he found in watercolor a medium to explore the fragility and strength of the human condition.
In his works, water does more than merely dilute the pigment: it opens up space for the unexpected. The faces he paints seem to slowly emerge from transparency, modeled by washes (or veladuras) that suggest stories rather than describing them explicitly. His sensitivity for capturing gazes and silences has made him a prominent presence within contemporary watercolor.
Jung has shared his work through exhibitions, demonstrations, and artistic gatherings both within and outside of Korea, where his process—at once precise and spontaneous—has garnered admiration among audiences and students. From his studio in Goyang-si, he continues to investigate light upon skin, the limits of water, and human expression, maintaining a constant dialogue with a global community that follows his work.
