Atanas Matsoureff – Bulgaria

Atanas Matsoureff (Bansko, Bulgaria, 1975) is a watercolorist renowned for his realistic approach, imbued with a touch of magical realism in landscapes, objects, and everyday scenes. Although he began his studies at a technical school specializing in wood carving, he discovered watercolor and made it his primary medium, developing a highly personal style.

A self-taught artist, Matsoureff seeks to capture the essence of nature and the small details that surround us, exploring how light, color, and emotion translate onto paper. About his work, he remarks: “Watercolor offers a world of possibilities to express what we feel and see. Every blank sheet, every shade of color, every brushstroke has its own story. I prefer to paint nature and the simple things we encounter every day. My goal is to convey something beyond visible reality.”

Throughout his career, Matsoureff has received numerous international accolades, including the Gold Grand Prize at the 39th Annual Artist’s Magazine Competition, the Gold Award at the Rockwell International Watercolour Competition in Canada, First Prize at the International Watercolor Competition in Izmir, Turkey, and First Prize at the Marche d’Acqua International Biennale in Fabriano, Italy. His work has also been recognized in China and other countries and is part of private and museum collections worldwide.

In addition to his work as an artist, Matsoureff shares his expertise through workshops and masterclasses, continuing to exhibit both individually and collectively, always striving to convey the beauty and strength of everyday life.
